I am one of several resident artists in the guild Chronicles of Tyria [CoT], and am the sole artist behind the webcomic.
By trade and training I am an electrical/electronics engineer. I have been drawing as a hobby since the 4th grade. I even still have my sketchbooks from back then. My biggest problem as an artist is getting my pieces done while I still give a damn about them. Very quickly I would get lost/bogged down in anatomy and details that the Idea, the Feeling of the piece would get forgotten. Many of my refined pieces have 100's of hours put into them, and did not always come out how I wanted because the end was usually slapped together.
To work on this I started doing speed painting. Speedpainting you do not have much time, so you are more focused on getting the information down and the point across than how perfectly correct it is. That is how Podcast Art came about. CoT does a weekly podcast and in the hour+ the 'cast goes on I speedpaint an idea. When the podcast ends, so does my painting. I prefer to do this to the live podcast so that i have no idea how much time I will get. This has been a huge help in teaching me to let go and let my pieces be more organic, as well as improve my overall speed.
